This can include individuals with visual or hearing impairments, mobility limitations, cognitive differences, neurodivergence, or situational challenges such as temporary injuries or low-bandwidth environments. By improving accessibility, we\u2019re supporting people with permanent impairments and creating a smoother, more intuitive experience for <em>everyone<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past few months, our team has made a series of improvements designed to enhance accessibility across our platform. We wanted to share some of the work already completed, along with areas we\u2019re continuing to prioritise as part of our long-term commitment to <strong>inclusive digital fundraising<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Why Accessibility Matters<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Accessibility is a core part of good digital design. People access fundraising sites using a wide range of devices, tools, and preferences. Some may use <strong>screen readers<\/strong>, while others navigate using a <strong>keyboard<\/strong>, rely on <strong>high-contrast settings<\/strong>, or adjust <strong>text size<\/strong> to improve readability.<\/p>\n<p>Creating an accessible platform ensures that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No supporter is excluded from donating or taking part in an event<\/li>\n<li>Fundraisers can reach wider and more diverse audiences<\/li>\n<li>Everyone has a fair, consistent, and positive experience<\/li>\n<li>Events meet best-practice standards such as <strong>WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Accessible design benefits all users, not just those who depend on assistive technologies, and it ultimately strengthens the impact of every fundraising campaign.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>What We\u2019ve Improved So Far<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our development team has focused on the areas that matter most for user experience and compliance with key accessibility guidelines.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Improved Screen Reader Support<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We\u2019ve reviewed and updated core areas of the platform\u2014including donation forms, silent auction pages, and guest registration flows\u2014to ensure better compatibility with popular screen readers such as <strong>JAWS, NVDA, and VoiceOver<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This work includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Adding and refining <strong>ARIA labels<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Ensuring interactive elements have clear, descriptive text<\/li>\n<li>Reducing unnecessary navigation paths<\/li>\n<li>Improving the logical reading order for assistive technology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These updates help ensure screen reader users can navigate, donate, and bid with confidence.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> Enhanced Keyboard Navigation<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Many users navigate digital content using a keyboard alone. We\u2019ve refined:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tab order<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Focus states and indicators<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Menu navigation behaviour<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Users can now move through event sites and dashboard pages using keyboard controls without unexpected traps or interruptions.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong> Clearer Error Messaging<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Accessible error messaging is essential for completing tasks quickly and successfully. We\u2019ve improved:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The clarity and placement of visual error messages<\/li>\n<li>How these messages are announced to screen readers<\/li>\n<li>Links between error messages and their corresponding fields<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This makes forms, bidding actions, and registration flows easier and more intuitive for all users.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong> Consistent Heading Structure and Landmarks<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A predictable heading structure helps screen reader users understand the layout of a page instantly.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve standardised:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Page heading hierarchies (H1, H2, H3, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Semantic landmarks such as navigation and main content roles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This makes it easier for users to jump between sections and maintain orientation across the site.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong> More Accessible Forms<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Forms sit at the centre of many Givergy experiences, from donations to bidding and guest registration.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve improved:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Field labels<\/li>\n<li>Mandatory field indicators<\/li>\n<li>Descriptive, accessible error messages<\/li>\n<li>Logical form sequencing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These updates help ensure every supporter can complete key actions quickly and confidently.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s Next<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Accessibility is an ongoing commitment, not a one-off project.
